As part of a nationwide orientation and training of newly elected and appointed assembly members, the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) organized a two (2) day capacity building for Assembly Members of the Bolgatanga East District on 7th to 8th October 2024 to enable them effectively undertake their roles and responsibilities envisaged in the local governance Act 2016 (Act 936).
Hon Albert Agana, District Chief Executive (DCE), in a brief welcome address thanked the Institute of Local Government Studies for coming to orient and train assembly members on their roles and responsibilities, and he encouraged assembly members to actively participate in the training.
All twenty-four (24) assembly members were trained over the course of two days by three (3) facilitators, Mr. Salia Abdul Moomen, Mr. Tarik Moomin, and Mr. Raphael Abora. The topics covered included: Ghana’s decentralization policy and local governance system; the district assembly as a system and the specific roles and responsibilities of assembly members; local government and administrative laws; overview of the model standing orders; local revenue mobilization, LED and job creation; the assembly member as a leader ad advocate for ethics, transparency and accountability.
The open forum sparked insightful questions and valuable contributions from Assembly members.
The Presiding Member, Hon. Akoriga Norbert Akolgo on behalf of his colleague assembly members thanked the ILGS and the facilitators for impacting them with more knowledge on their roles and responsibilities of being assembly member. He went on to say that the district would gain a lot from their effective training.
