The Bolgatanga East District assembly (BEDA) on Tuesday, 27th August 2024 at the assemblys conference hall held its second ordinary meeting.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. Albert Agana in his sessional address thanked assembly members for given him the opportunity to account for his stewardship upon his assumption to the office of DCE in April this year.
The DCE pleaded with members of the house to put the interest of the constituents and the district first before any others considerations. He further proceeded by enumerating some key areas and the successes chalked.
On health, the DCE updated the noble house on some projects that were on-going and at various stages of completions. These projects he said included the following:
- Completion of 1 No CHPS Compound at Kumbosigo. (DACF-RFG, completed but yet to be handed over)
- Construction and furnishing of a 3-Unit accommodation for nurses at Dulugu CHPS compound. (SOCO, 98% complete)
- Work is progressing steadily with the CHPS Compound at Dabore (SOCO, 97% completed)
He added that the health directorate within the period conducted two rounds of Seasonal Malaria Chemo-prevention campaigns across the District with a 98% achievement in each round of campaign. And that the Directorate is still conducting Covid-19 vaccination campaigns, so persons who have still not taken the vaccinations could be vaccinated.
Touching on education, the DCE gladly informed member on the number of pupils that sat for the for the BECE examinations which was held from 8th to 12 July, 2024. A total of 683 pupils (330 Boys, 353 Girls), one male pupil did not take the exams, and thankfully no girl took the exams while pregnant.
The DCE further added that, the education directorate on the 14th June to 5th July 2024, organized Reading Festival for Basic 1, 2 and 3 at the school, circuit, District and regional levels to improve the reading abilities of the pupils.
On roads, the DCE mentioned the following the road projects that were completed and in use.
- Construction of 1 No two cell 1200mm diameter pipe culverts with 6 meters width at Zonno-Zori, Dachio and Kumbosigo (SOCO).
- The reshaping and spot improvement of 10km of feeder roads in Dachio, Zonno-Zori, Kumbosigo (SOCO),
- The reshaping and spot improvement of 10km of feeder roads Nyorkorkor, Dulugu and Yarigabisi (SOCO).
He also informed the members about what the government of H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had done in terms of procuring basic road maintenance equipment under the District Road Network Improvement Programme to improve, maintain, rehabilitate and upgrade local roads network in all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Hon. Albert Agana, DCE added that each district would be given some number of equipment’s such as tipper truck, roller, back hole, grader etc
On agriculture, the DCE was very pleased to announce to members the continuation of the second phase of the Government Flagship programme (Planting for Foods and Jobs), and that implementation has been going on in the District with sensitization, registration and fertilizer distribution.
On security, the DCE mentioned that he was committed to the security of all constituents in the district and for that matter he had improved the street lightening situation in the district. “I have endeavoured to put street lights in as many dark areas as possible and I will continue to do so as long as the resources are available.” He stated.
He added that the district was relatively peaceful, devoid of violence, acrimony and that any activity that has the potential to disturb the peace constituents were enjoying would be immediately handled by the District Security Committee (DISEC) of the district assembly.
The DCE presented the house with six (6) recommendations from the Executive Committee meeting held on 8th August, 2024, for members consideration and approval;
- Assembly should lobby for the creation of a VRA/NEDCo office in the District to ease the stress of accessing their services in the District.
- Management should find a way to charge tipper tracks drivers some fee for winning sand/gravel in the District.
- Assembly should form a committee to look to finding a lasting solution to the issue of stray Animals in the District.
- Assembly should procure more mono desk furniture for selected JHS in the District.
- Assembly should facilitate the acquisition of a site for permanent Girls model schools and look to the creation of a Boy’s model school.
- A community-based development control committee/volunteers should be formed to assist the building inspectorate unit to curb unapproved structures springing up everywhere in the District.
